UN-17 Sustainability Development Goals (SDGs)

Launched in 2015 as part of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent a global effort to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. The initiative builds on earlier international efforts such as the Brundtland Report and the Earth Summits, and includes 17 goals designed to address issues like poverty, inequality, climate change, education, and health. Each goal contains measurable targets to track global progress. The SDGs aim to create a more equitable, sustainable, and peaceful world through coordinated action by all countries, regardless of status. This ambitious framework encourages long-term collaboration across governments, organizations, and communities worldwide. The Lemelson team contributes to this global vision by advancing the framework through community outreach initiatives and faculty development programs at UTA.

UTA’s Division For Faculty Success, Office of Sustainability, and the Lemelson grant team work closely with UTA faculty to encourage the addition of sustainability goals in their courses. Through High Impact Sustainable Practice Bootcamps, and the sustainability course program, UTA now offers over 100 courses designed with sustainable development in mind. Each course designated as a sustainability course must include specific SDGs in their syllabi. The number of sustainability courses are growing every semester and can be viewed in full on the UTA website here: Office of Sustainability- Education and Outreach
